After five successful years at our Lemmon Valley site, the Nevada Bugs and Butterflies Science Center and Butterfly house will be temporarily closed this summer as we work to find a permanent home. While we are sad not to welcome everyone to the butterfly this summer, we look forward to welcoming you to a new future site, where we will bring visitors a renewed sense of place, connection with our natural resources, and a new love for insects for many years to come. You can read more about this here.
Please note that we are an outdoor facility, so it’s always good to dress weather-appropriate with closed-toe shoes. We do have water and a restroom on site. Click here for the (approximate) current weather at the butterfly house!
The butterfly house and outdoor science center is located just 20 minutes north of downtown Reno in Lemmon Valley, at the corner of Matterhorn Blvd. and Fir Dr. Our address is:
413 Matterhorn Blvd., Reno, Nevada 89506
The Lemmon Dr. detour has been removed (at least temporarily) and you can now take the normal route to our location. Please follow the directions below, and call us at 775-200-8774 if you have any questions.
Directions from Reno:
- Take US-395 N to exit 74, then right on Lemmon Dr. for 4.6 miles.
- Turn right onto Waterash St. for 0.2 mile.
- Turn right onto Tupelo St. for 0.2 mile.
- Turn left onto Matterhorn Blvd. for 0.8 miles.
The butterfly house and science center will be on your left. Please park in the parking lot next to the red workshop, or on Fir St. just to the north (there is a second entrance there). Please do not park on Matterhorn Blvd. as this is a high traffic road.
Hours, Admission & Group Visits
We will be open for the 2017 beginning June 22, and will be open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10-3 until September 9, except Saturday July 1. Feel free to email or call us at info[at]nevadabugs[dot]org or 775-200-8774 for outreach events.
Our Butterfly House and Science Center is a free educational asset for the northern Nevada community!
The butterfly house is always free and open to families during our open hours. Group visits are also free and available by reservation: If you would like to schedule a group, please email us with potential dates during our open hours, group size and age, and organization (mom’s club, school class, etc.). Please note that groups are limited to 20-25 children, depending on age, in order to accommodate the size of our site. We also request at least three adults for each group.
